Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE)

The Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) tool is a structured cognitive assessment designed to help therapists screen for cognitive impairment and track a patient's cognitive function over time. It guides therapists through the standard MMSE questionnaire, calculates the total score automatically, provides interpretation hints, and stores historical results per patient.

What you can do

  • Administer the standard MMSE questionnaire directly within the platform.
  • Automatically calculate the patient's total score as you fill in answers.
  • View interpretation hints based on the total score (cut-offs, severity, education-adjusted ranges).
  • Save examinations against a specific patient for longitudinal tracking.
  • Review past examinations and visualize a patient's cognitive progress over time.

Getting Started

To use the tool, navigate to Features > Tools > Mini Mental State Examination.

Starting an Examination

  1. Select a Patient: Search for and select the patient you want to assess. The MMSE is always linked to a specific patient to enable history tracking.
  2. Click Begin Examination.

Once started, you will see the Examination Panel.

Examination Panel

The examination panel allows you to record scores for each MMSE question, review interpretations, and save the result.

Score Entry

  • Each question is presented as a row with:
    • The maximum score allowed for that question.
    • A patient score field where you enter the score the patient achieved.
    • The question description.
  • The Total row updates in real-time as you enter scores, summing all individual question scores (out of 30).
  • Click Save to store the examination against the selected patient.

Interpretation

The right-hand panel shows clinical interpretation hints based on the current total score, including:

  • Cut-off thresholds for cognitive impairment.
  • Ranges suggesting the likelihood of dementia.
  • Education-adjusted thresholds (e.g., 8th grade, high school, college).
  • Severity indicators (none, mild, severe).

The relevant interpretations for the current score are highlighted automatically.

Patient History

Once a patient has at least one saved examination, the tool displays their cognitive progress.

Progress Chart

  • A line chart visualizes the patient's total MMSE scores over time.
  • Click on any data point in the chart to load that historical examination into the panel.

Past Scores

  • A list of all previous examinations for the selected patient is shown, ordered from most recent to oldest.
  • Click on any entry to load that examination and review the individual question scores.
  • While viewing a historical record, the scores are read-only. Click New Examination to start a fresh assessment for the same patient.

Session Management

  • Patient-linked: Every MMSE record is associated with a patient, making it easy to track cognitive changes over time.
  • Edit Patient: Use the (edit) button next to the patient's name to switch to a different patient before saving.
  • History Navigation: Switch freely between past examinations and a new examination without losing data already saved.
